Use a stinger (transition animation)

Set up Stingers 1 and 2: choose a ready-made template or your own video, adjust the cut point and use it with Quick Play.

Step by step

  1. In the middle column, click the + next to Stinger 1 or Stinger 2.
  2. In the Stinger window, click a template under READY-MADE TEMPLATES, choose a video from the PROJECT VIDEOS table or click + Video from computer….
  3. In Cut at, drag to the moment the video covers the screen. Or click Halfway.
  4. Click Done.
  5. Click the Stinger in the transitions panel and use Quick Play or Enter.

How it works

The stinger video plays on top of everything. At the cut point, Preview goes into Program hidden behind it. When the video ends, the new shot is already on air.

Where the video comes from

  • READY-MADE TEMPLATES: come with the program. One click adds the template to the project as an input and selects it for the stinger right away.
  • PROJECT VIDEOS: the table shows the number, the name, the DURATION and whether it has TRANSPARENCY.
  • + Video from computer…: accepts .mov, .mp4, .m4v, .webm and .mkv files. The video goes into the project and the stinger at once.

Transparency

The usual choice is a video with transparency, such as ProRes 4444 or HEVC with alpha. A video without transparency also works, but it covers the whole screen during the transition. The window warns you when this happens.

Cut point

The cut point is the moment the video covers the screen. If you don't change it, the cut happens halfway through the video.

Questions

What happens if the stinger has no video?

Clicking it opens the window to choose the video. If it is still used without a video, the transition becomes Fade.

What if I press Cut in the middle of the stinger?

The cut happens right away and the stinger video leaves the screen.

How do I change a stinger's video?

Click the + next to it and choose another one.
